Abstract
The study empirically examined consumer shopping behavior in terms of consumer goods classification system. Based on the large volume survey, the authors empirically tested that buyers?expenditure was positively related to search time saving, search amount, and contingent on the income of buyers. Amount of expenditure also positively associated with extensiveness of search process. The extent of physical search increased with price paid for the item increased. A significant amount of pre-shopping or mental efforts precedes the actual physical search for shopping goods. Causal and exhaustive search processes are reflected in the study.
The authors concluded that concept of a classification system is based on continuum rather than discrete classification mechanism. A accurate classification system should reflect consumer prepurchase behavior and physical search process. The study tested some hypothesis regarding consumer shopping behavior. It notified the importance of prepurchase behavior and search process. The conditions for buyers?search behavior were clarified in the empirical study.
