Abstract:

This paper reported the result of a survey to 107 US firms in distribution industry in the application of computer. The authors reported that there was increasing use of computer system in different functional areas (e.g. document preparation, inventory control, routing arrangement and forecasting etc.). Much of the firms had internal development capability but relied on external organization to support their computer system. Specific program applications and low priority of systems development for distribution activities given by management were the two most popular problems of computerization in the distribution industry.

 Two major issues were identified in distribution firms if computerization could be realized to its full potential: a) the internal capability within distribution organization of understanding on computer applications; b) a careful and comprehensive plan for computer-oriented requirements.
